Gods of Mount Olympus. The Ancient Greeks believed in many gods who lived on top of Mount Olympus. Zeus was the king of the gods and ruled the sky with his lightning bolt. Poseidon controlled the sea with his trident, and Athena was the goddess of wisdom.
The First Olympics. The very first Olympic Games were held in Greece in 776 BC. Athletes ran, wrestled and raced chariots to win a wreath of olive leaves. The games were so important that wars were paused so everyone could watch them.
Athens and Sparta. Greece was made up of many city-states. Athens was famous for learning, art and democracy, where citizens voted on important decisions. Sparta was a powerful military city, where boys trained to be soldiers from a very young age.
Greek Inventions and Ideas. The Greeks invented so many things we still use today. They created the theatre, with plays and actors. They came up with democracy and philosophy, asking big questions about the world. And Hippocrates, the father of medicine, taught doctors to study patients carefully.
